Construction Laborer/Operator
Join the team that keeps the Forest Preserve District's infrastructure strong and safe. As a Construction Laborer/Operator, you'll perform a variety of hands-on construction and maintenance work to install, repair, and maintain the physical assets and utilities that support the preserves.
This role combines skilled labor, equipment operation, and teamwork to ensure our trails, buildings, and facilities are built and maintained to the highest standards.
What You'll Do
- Operate and maintain construction tools and equipment, including jackhammers, tampers, grinders, saws, impact tools, cement mixers, and more.
- Use a wide range of hand tools for digging, trenching, concrete finishing, tuckpointing, and other maintenance repairs.
- Safely operate heavy equipment such as skid steers, cranes, backhoes, and excavators for a variety of projects.
- Assist other trades staff with building construction, rehabilitation, and demolition activities.
- Load, transport, and unload materials, tools, and equipment for daily work using vehicles requiring a CDL.
- Work independently and as a part of a crew to support members and seasonal staff as directed.
- Conduct mobilization, worksite setup and breakdown, and implement safety controls for all job tasks.
- Set up and maintain safe work zones as well as perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and equipment care as assigned.
- Remove snow and assist with maintaining a safe and organized yard and shop environment.
- Identify and report structural or safety deficiencies within the preserves, recommending repairs when needed.
- Operate aerial lifts, boom lifts, bucket trucks, and other elevated equipment safely at heights up to 100 feet.
- Follow all District safety standards, maintaining a clean and hazard-free work environment.
- Promote teamwork, customer service, and a culture of safety and excellence.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What You'll Need
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
- Construction Trades & Technical Training; 3 – 6 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid Driver's License in good standing.
- Illinois Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with combination vehicle and airbrakes endorsement within (6) months of employment in good standing.
- Must pass a medical evaluation and fit test, per OSHA regulations, to ensure a respirator can be safely worn when required.
- OSHA 10-hour 1926, Excavation Safety Training, and confined space within (6) months of employment.
- Knowledge of methods, practices, processes, and materials used in construction trades, facilities management, and maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, necessary safety precautions, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) related to construction trades.
- Adept at understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Skilled in fundamental use and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment associated with various trade work.
- Competent in performing manual labor related to maintenance and trade activities.
- Adept at operating trucks and trailers for material and equipment transportation.
- Effective at identifying and reporting occupational hazards and infrastructure deficiencies.
- Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships.
- Ability to utilize basic software programs; work order system, Outlook, etc.
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and data.
Schedule, Pay & Benefits
- Monday-Friday, 6:30 am - 2:30 pm.
- Starting Pay: $30.20 - $33.00 per hour.
- Infrequent overtime requirements during winter snow/ice operations or emergency call-outs.

- Based out of the District's Facilities Maintenance office in West Chicago, IL.
- Field-based work across various forest preserve sites throughout DuPage County.
